I don't agree that you can equate socialism with the liberal agenda in general. People like myself believe in capitalism with a conscience. Free markets with the caveat that an affluent society should let its citizens starve.

It is you who meddled the "entire left-wing agenda" with socialism. It is I who endeavors to categorize them as seperate.
Perhaps you could enumerate all the instances where liberalism embraces free market principles?

Liberalism as used in this context attempts to exert control on other people’s resources to affect social change.
Some examples are:
Minimum Wage laws
Affirmative Action
Social Security
Welfare etc.
